Watch Strap Sizing & Installation Guide

Struggling to size or install a new watch strap? You’re not alone. Choosing the correct width and length — and knowing how to install it without damaging your watch — can be confusing.

This guide will walk you through:

  • How to measure strap width (lug size)
  • How to measure strap length for comfort
  • The tools you’ll need for installation
  • Step-by-step instructions to install your new strap
  • Common mistakes to avoid

Find your perfect fit

You'll need at least two measurements to choose a strap that fits properly: the width and the length. If you plan to swap out the buckle for a new one or switch to a deployant clasp, you'll also need to know the strap/buckle taper measurement.

Step 1: Measure Your Watch Strap Width

Your watch’s lug width determines the strap size.

  • Use a caliper or ruler to measure the inside distance between the lugs.
  • Common widths: 18mm, 20mm, 22mm.
  • A strap that’s too narrow will shift around; too wide won’t fit.

Step 2: Measure Your Watch Strap Length

Length determines wrist comfort.

  • Many straps come in short and long lengths.
  • Measure your wrist with a tape measure where the watch sits.
  • Compare to the strap’s specifications before buying.

Step 3: Gather Your Tools

Before installing, gather:

  • Spring bar tool (essential for removing and installing bars)
  • Soft cloth or mat to protect your watch
  • Optional: tweezers or spare spring bars

Step 4: Install the New Strap (or Buckle)

  1. Place watch face down on a soft cloth.
  2. Insert spring bars into strap ends.
  3. Position one end of spring bar into the lug hole.
  4. Use spring bar tool to compress opposite end, sliding it into the other lug hole.
  5. Wiggle gently until you hear/feel a click.

A Note on Strap/Buckle Tapering

Most watch straps taper—they start wider at the lug end (where the strap attaches to the watch) and narrow toward the buckle end.

Your buckle size is determined by the buckle end width, not the lug width. For example:

  • A 22mm strap that tapers to 20mm at the buckle requires a 20mm buckle.
  • A 22mm buckle would be too large and won’t fit properly.

Why this matters:

  • If you’re replacing a buckle with one of your own
  • Or adding a deployant clasp for extra comfort and security

At Holben’s, we make this easy by listing both lug and buckle measurements for every strap we sell.

Quick Rule of Thumb:
Match your buckle to the strap’s buckle end width—not the lug width.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the wrong width strap
  • Scratching your watch lugs with metal tools
  • Re-using old or bent spring bars
  • Skipping measurements and guessing strap length

Now all that's left to do is enjoy your new strap. If you have any questions, contact us and we would be happy to help.

FAQs

Q: Can I install a strap without tools?
A: It’s possible, but not recommended. A spring bar tool makes the process safer and easier.

Q: Are straps interchangeable between all watches?
A: No — straps must match your watch’s lug width and attachment style.

Q: How do I know if I need a long strap?
A: If your wrist measures over 7.5 inches (190mm), consider a long strap option.
