The material you choose affects how a watch strap looks, feels and performs. Leather can soften and develop character with wear. Rubber handles water and active use with little maintenance. Leather Watch Straps
Leather watch straps offer the widest range of textures, finishes and styles. Depending on the leather and construction, they can work with everything from slim dress watches to field watches and chronographs.
Leather also changes more with use than most other strap materials. Some leathers gradually soften, darken or develop patina, while others are finished to maintain a more consistent appearance.
Common Leather Types
Calf leather is the most versatile category. It may be smooth, grained, embossed, padded, distressed or finished in ways that reproduce the appearance of other leather types.
Suede and nubuck have a softer, textured surface and generally create a more casual appearance. They work particularly well with field watches, vintage-inspired watches and watches where you want the strap to add texture without a glossy finish.
Shell cordovan is dense, smooth and valued for durability and the way it develops character over time. Horween shell cordovan is particularly well known among leather enthusiasts.
Exotic leathers such as alligator, crocodile, ostrich and lizard offer distinctive natural patterns and are often chosen for dress-oriented watches.

Rubber Watch Straps
Rubber watch straps require relatively little maintenance. They handle water, perspiration and frequent cleaning well, making them particularly useful for dive watches, sports watches and warm climates.
Rubber is not one material, however. FKM, NBR and natural rubber have somewhat different characteristics, and strap design can matter as much as the rubber compound itself.
FKM Rubber
Fluoroelastomer, commonly called FKM, is highly resistant to heat, sunlight, salt water and many substances encountered during everyday wear. Quality FKM straps tend to have a dense, smooth feel and are easy to clean.
NBR Rubber
Nitrile butadiene rubber, or NBR, has a long history in dive-watch straps. It combines durability with flexibility and is often softer from the beginning than some denser rubber compounds. Bonetto Cinturini is particularly well known for its Italian-made NBR straps.
Natural Rubber and Caoutchouc
Natural rubber, often described as caoutchouc, tends to have a slightly springier feel. High-quality natural rubber can be flexible, comfortable and durable, which is why it remains popular for both classic and modern rubber strap designs.
What About Silicone?
Silicone is common in inexpensive watch straps and can be soft and flexible. It also tends to attract more lint, dust and pet hair than quality FKM or NBR. Better silicone products exist, but most of the premium rubber straps we carry use FKM, NBR or natural rubber instead.

Textile Watch Straps
Textile watch straps include several different materials and constructions. Nylon, Perlon, canvas, Cordura, elastic woven straps and other synthetic textiles can behave quite differently, so it is useful to look beyond the general textile label.
As a group, textile straps tend to be lighter than leather, rubber or steel. Many also allow more airflow around the wrist, which can make them especially comfortable in warm weather.
Nylon
Nylon is used in military pass-through, single-pass and conventional two-piece straps. It is lightweight, durable and generally dries relatively quickly after getting wet. Thickness and weave vary considerably, so one nylon strap may feel much softer or more substantial than another.
Perlon
Perlon straps use a braided synthetic construction rather than conventional adjustment holes. The buckle pin passes directly through the weave, allowing continuous adjustment. Perlon is particularly lightweight and allows plenty of airflow, which makes it a popular warm-weather option.
Canvas
Canvas has a more substantial woven appearance than most nylon or Perlon straps. Depending on the construction and backing, canvas can range from soft and flexible to noticeably structured. Water resistance varies by model, so check the individual product rather than assuming all canvas straps can be soaked or washed.
Cordura and Technical Fabrics
Cordura and similar technical fabrics offer a more structured textile surface and are often used for sport, field and casual straps. Some are combined with synthetic or leather linings, so care and water resistance depend on the complete construction rather than the outer fabric alone.
Elastic Woven Straps
Elastic woven straps, including Erika's Originals MN straps, stretch slightly with wrist movement and allow fine adjustment. Their combination of flexibility, breathability and secure fit makes them popular for sports watches, dive watches and everyday wear.

Stainless Steel Watch Bracelets
Stainless steel watch bracelets offer a different wearing experience from leather, rubber or textile. They are durable, easy to clean and available in both woven mesh and conventional link constructions.
Mesh Bracelets
Mesh bracelets use woven or interlocking stainless steel rather than conventional solid links. Fine mesh can feel smooth and flexible, while heavier mesh provides more structure and visual weight. Brands such as Staib offer mesh in a variety of weights and constructions.
Link Bracelets
Link bracelets use articulated metal links and range from historically inspired ladder, flat-link and beads-of-rice designs to more substantial contemporary bracelets. Many Forstner bracelets are designed around classic bracelet styles or specific watch models.

Hybrid and Specialty Materials
Not every watch strap fits neatly into one material category. Some use multiple materials to combine the appearance or feel of one material with the performance characteristics of another.
Leather or Textile With Rubber Backing
Selected Hirsch Performance straps combine leather or textile uppers with ventilated rubber backings. These constructions offer greater resistance to perspiration and everyday moisture than conventional leather-lined straps while retaining the appearance and texture of the upper material.
Sailcloth-Style Synthetic Straps
Some modern straps use synthetic materials or embossed surfaces to create a sailcloth-style appearance while improving resistance to water and wear. Artem's HydroFlex and Loop-Less HydroFlex lines are examples of technically oriented straps designed for sport and everyday use.
Alcantara
Alcantara is a synthetic microfiber material with a soft, suede-like surface. It provides texture without using animal leather and is used on selected watch straps for a lightweight, tactile feel.
Choosing a Material by How You Wear Your Watch
Swimming and Frequent Water Exposure
Rubber is the simplest choice for regular swimming, salt water and pool use. Stainless steel is also well suited to water, provided the watch itself is appropriately water resistant. Some textile straps can get wet, but drying time and water resistance vary by construction.
Most conventional leather should be kept out of the water. If you prefer the appearance of leather, look for a model specifically designed for improved moisture resistance or consider a leather-and-rubber hybrid.
Hot and Humid Weather
Rubber, Perlon, lightweight nylon and elastic woven straps are all strong options. The best choice depends on whether you value maximum water resistance, airflow or low weight.
A vented rubber strap can handle perspiration easily, while Perlon and lightweight woven straps allow more air to circulate around the wrist.
Dress Watches
Leather remains the traditional choice. Smooth calf leather, shell cordovan and selected exotic leathers tend to work particularly well with slim cases and simpler dials.
Strap thickness and taper matter as much as the leather itself. A thick, minimally tapered strap can overwhelm a slim dress watch even when the leather is high quality.
Field and Casual Watches
Field watches are unusually flexible. Suede, nubuck, distressed leather, canvas, nylon, Perlon and understated rubber can all work well. The choice comes down largely to the look you prefer and the conditions in which you'll wear the watch.
Dive and Sport Watches
Rubber and stainless steel are natural starting points, particularly when water resistance matters. Textile straps also work well when low weight or breathability is more important than a traditional bracelet or dive-strap appearance.
Large or Heavy Watches
A heavier watch generally benefits from a strap or bracelet that offers enough support to keep the case centered. That does not automatically mean choosing the thickest option available. Construction, flexibility, width and taper all influence how well a strap supports the watch.

Common Material-Choice Mistakes
Assuming All Rubber Feels the Same
Rubber compound is only part of the equation. Thickness, molded shape, venting, taper and flexibility can make two straps made from similar rubber feel completely different.
Assuming Every Textile Strap Is Waterproof
Nylon, Perlon, canvas, Cordura and lined textile straps do not all handle water the same way. Check the care and water-resistance information for the individual product.
Swimming in Conventional Leather
Repeated soaking can damage many leather straps and shorten their useful life. Choose rubber, stainless steel or an appropriate textile strap when frequent water exposure is expected.
Choosing Material Without Considering Thickness
Material alone does not determine whether a strap suits a watch. A slim rubber strap and a substantial rubber strap can look completely different on the same watch, just as thin calf leather and heavily padded leather serve different purposes.
Ignoring Strap Taper
